The Maremma, rich in sunflowers and wheat, is a less discovered area located in the southwestern corner of Tuscany, yet only one and a half hours from Rome.
This particular area is obviously one of my favorite places on earth: there is something special about the light as it reflects on the old stone-type hill towns, the air with a hint of sea-salt, the sky as it seems touchable or maybe is the olive trees planted systematically or simply the ancient traditions that have never eroded.
The roads twist and turn through steep ridges, wooded forests, open crop land that finally gives way to views of the Sea in the distance.
The Maremma is every shade of green imaginable in the spring and an awesome array of earth tones in the fall. The winter months collect a combination of both toned with tranquility that is always underlying.
This is the area that was chosen by the Etruscans and it now boasts an abundance of rich historical sites such as Vulci, Sovana and Cosa.
